1453476 Cabinets; furniture frames E G RENSCH 26 Oct 1973 [28 Get 1972 15 Nov 1972 17 March 1973] 49980/73 Headings A4B and A4H [Also in Division F2] An article of furniture, e.g. shelving, cabinet or table, includes a component in the form of, or including a part thereof, an extruded bar 1 with a basic cross-section in the form of an H defined by a short web inter-connecting a shorter flange 3 and a longer, parallel flange 2 together defining opposed, identical slots 5, the ends of the flanges 2, 3 being chamfered in common planes which intersect in a plane containing the web 4. In the article of furniture the bars 1 are connected to other parts by coupling members which engage either in the slots 5 or in a further slot provided in the bars 1. In one embodiment, Fig. 5, two bars 1 with bevealed ends 18 form part of a frame of a panel are interconnected by a plate 14 which is ribbed with sawteeth Fig. 9a (not shown) the plate 14 being fitted in further slots 10 provided in the bars 1. Alternatively, Fig. 7, bars 1 have further slots defined between lipped flanges 16, 17, the bars I inter-connected by an angle bracket having serrated limbs engaged in the further slots. In another embodiment, Figs. 11, 12, a table comprises a top 23 provided at its edges with bars 1 having the basic H-section, the slots 5 of the bars 1 being engaged by flanges 25 of brackets. Each bracket has end slots 27 which engage over webs 4 of legs St having parts defining the basic section 1. In a further embodiment, Figs. 20, 21, shelves 32 have edge rails 1 with lower slots 5 engaged by flanges 25 of a generally T-shaped bracket 33 having a slot defining an end portion which fits between ribs 43 in a spacer tube 31. The spacer tube has a dovetail formation 40 engaged in a dovetail slot 38 in a wall mounted rail 30. In a modification the shelving is free standing. A pair of bars with the basic H cross-section may be joined by a pair of clips 69 Fig. 24, each clip having flanges 70 engaged in slots 5 and legs 72, 73 with interlocking teeth 22a, 23a. Anti-slip strips 64 are fitted in the bottoms of the slots 5. The clips 69 may be utilized, Fig. 25, to connect panels P to posts St having parts with the basic H-section. Alternatively, Fig. 24b, a modified pair of clips 94 may be secured together by a screw passed through bores 96 in the clips 94. In a further embodiment, Fig. 30, four panels P1-P4 have edge bars with the basic H-section inter-connected by angle brackets 19 engaged in the slots 5. Each panel is clad with polystyrene foam which penetrates into a further slot 10, a foil 15 covers both sides of the foam.
