Abstract

1453424 Surgical electrodes H R LAGERGREN 16 April 1974 [14 April 1973] 16618/74 Heading A5R An endocardiac electrode device for intracardially stimulating the heart comprises an elongate electrically conductive member 1 surrounded by insulating material 2, and a generally cylindrical head portion 3 having surface regions 5 comprising electrically conducting strips disposed parallel to one another and to the axis of the device, the head portion 3 also having surface regions 4 of electrically insulating material. The total surface area of the conductive regions 5 is not more than 15 mm<SP>2</SP>, and is preferably 5 mm<SP>2</SP>. The volume of the head portion 3 is between about 15mm<SP>3</SP> and about 60mm<SP>3</SP>, and is preferably about 25mm<SP>3</SP>. The weight of the head portion 3 is between about 0.30g and about 2.0g, and is preferably about 0.8g. The width of the strips may be from about 0.01mm to about 0.4mm, is preferably about 0.2mm, and their spacing is from about 0.5mm to about 5mm, and is preferably about 1.5mm. In a second embodiment, Figure 2 (not shown) helical electrically conductive strips 5 are disposed about a generally cylindrical head portion 3. Successive turns of the helix are separated by a distance of from about 0.5mm to about 5mm, and preferably about 2mm. In a third embodiment, Figure 3 (not shown) the conductive regions 5 take the form of isolated discs on the surface of head portion 3. In all the embodiments the conductive regions may alternatively comprise the protruding regions of an electrically conducting central core, the interspaces between the protruding regions being filled with electrically insulating material. The central core may be of screwthread or hedgehog configuration. In a further embodiment, the electrically conductive regions may comprise a wire cage, which cage is at least partially filled with electrically insulating material.
