Abstract

1452468 Charcoal from animal or vegetable materialization A & P COOP CO Inc 10 April 1975 14821/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] Charcoal is produced from small pieces of animal or vegetable material in a process comprising the following steps, the pieces are' introduced into the higher end of a slightly inclined horizontal retort which is rotated about its longitudinal axis so that the pieces are tumbled and advanced to the lower end of the retort as a moving bed partially filling the retort; the material is treated by combustion of an external fuel source only for long enough to dry the material and initiate the carbonization of a portion of the material the reaction then continues with the combustion of the combustible gas formed in the presence of air introduced tangentially into a lower peripheral region of the retort in the opposite direction of flow to that of the rotation of the retort, the combustion of the gas uses up all available oxygen before the oxygen reaches the moving bed; finally the charcoal is removed from the lower end of the retort.
