Abstract

1452101 Moulding foamed thermoplastics articles MONSANTO EUROPE SA 2 May 1974 [12 June 1973] 27899/73 Heading B5A A process for the production of foamed thermoplastic resin mouldings comprises applying, from solution, a coating of a lacquer which is adherable to the resin to the wall of the mould and injecting the heat softened thermoplastic resin into the mould so that on foaming the resin adheres to the lacquer which thus provides a surface coating on the finished article. In an example, a chair leg is produced by first spraying the mould with a solution of pvc in tetrahydrofuran, evaporating to produce a pvc coating on the mould, and injecting a foamable polystyrene composition into the coated mould. Other applications include containers, insulating materials, ceiling tiles and radio and television components. The preferred resins are polystyrene or acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene terpolymer but a large number of vinyl or vinylidene homo- or copolymers are mentioned. The preferred lacquers are polystyrene or cellulose esters but chlorinated rubber, acrylic resins, epoxy resins, polyurethanes and vinyl resins are also given as examples.
