Abstract

1451930 Capacitor discharge ignition devices AUTOELEKTRONIC AG 21 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 59630/73 Heading F1B The invention relates to a capacitor discharge ignition device for internal combustion engines wherein for each ignition spark a storage capacitor C 1 is charged from the secondary winding 1b of a charging transformer 1 wherein by triggering a thyristor 4 the storage capacitor is discharged through a primary winding 3a' of an ignition transformer 3 and wherein a battery B 1 a primary winding 1a of the charging transformer, the collector emitter path of a transistor TR and a primary winding 2 a of a feedback transformer 2 are connected in series. The transistor circuit has means for limiting the collector current to a maximum value in order to block the transistor via the feedback transformer whenever the collector current reaches a maximum and thus interrupt the current flow through the primary winding of the charging transformer. A control pulse generator 6 is provided for the thyristor and the transistor which control pulse generator, for each ignition spark triggers the thyristor by means of a control pulse so as to discharge the storage capacitor and to charge the storage capacitor switches the transistor to its conductive state. According to the invention the charging transformer is equipped with an additional secondary winding 1 c which is connected in series with a blocking diode D 2 and together with the blocking diode is connected in parallel with the primary winding of the ignition transformer 3 so that for each ignition spark, when current flows in the primary winding of the charging transformer the spark head generated due to discharge of the storage capacitor is prolonged by a spark tail as a result of energy being transmitted in the primary winding of the ignition transformer. The charging transformer has an air-gap (not shown) and the size of the air-gap together with the inductance of the additional secondary winding and the inductances of the primary winding and secondary winding of the ignition transformer determine the duration of the spark tail.
