Abstract

1451699 Aerating liquids ERNO RAUMFAHRTTECHNIK GmbH 25 Nov 1974 [24 Nov 1973] 50996/74 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions Cl, C6 and F4] Algae are aerobically cultured in a flowing stream of aqueous nutrient medium passing continuously through a flow channel having alternating narrow illuminated zones and broad dark zones. The required illumination may be provided from wells constituting transverse partitions 4, Fig. 1, within the culturing tank. A parallel beam of light from a source 9, produced by a parabolic mirror is reflected by a series of mirrors 12 into the flow path of the medium through windows 11. The wells are silver-coated on the inside, except for the windows. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3, the light wells 34 are arranged under the floor of the tank. The requisite air for the culturing may be supplied through pipes 35 laid on the floor along the transverse partitions 24 and side wall 23.
