Abstract

1,223,418. Agitating and aerating liquids. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 15 May, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 28064/67. Heading B1C. [Also in Division C6] A fermenter suitable for the cultviation of a micro-organism on an assimilable feedstock which is substantially insoluble in water and of lower density e.g. straight chain paraffinic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum, comprises a vessel 11, helical baffles 2, 3 and 4, 5 twined anti-clockwise and clockwise, respectively, and an impeller 6. The width of each baffle is 0.10-0.14 times the diameter of the vessel and the slope ranges between 10‹ and 80‹ to the horizontal. Side spillage of the descending culture medium off each baffle may be prevented by providing a lip to the inner edge or by tilting the baffle relatively to the inner surface of the vessel. A second impeller may be mounted on the shaft above impeller 6. The fermenter is provided with means (not shown) for aerating the culture medium. Thus, air may be introduced in the form of fine bubbles through a sintered surface or "vortex aeration" may be employed.
