Abstract
1451617 Medicinal oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 4 Dec 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 56177/73 Heading C5E Medicinal oils are prepared by contacting' e.g. at 200-300‹ C. and 25-200 bar, a hydrocarbon mixture, containing less than 10% by weight aromatics, with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing one or more noble metals of Group VIII on a carrier which contains 13-15% by weight alumina with the balance being silica. The catalyst suitably contains 0À05-5 wt. per cent Pt and has a surface area of 50-500 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and a pore volume of 0À2-1À2 ml./g. The feed can be an atmospheric or reduced pressure distillate or a raffinate obtained by extracting such a distillate with a selective solvent for aromatics. In the examples a raffinate obtained by extracting a reduced pressure distillate of a naphthenic crude oil with sulphur dioxide or furfural is pretreated by catalytic hydrogenation to reduce its aromatic and sulphur contents prior to use as a feed to the process of the invention. This pretreatment is carried out at 275-375‹C. and 25-200 bar using a sulphidic catalyst containing nickel and/or cobalt together with molybdenum and/or tungsten on alumina and which can be fluorinated before use; the alumina carrier can be prepared by calcining a material containing phosphate and peroxide ions.
