Abstract
1451484 Photographic silver halide bleach-fix bath ILFORD Ltd 10 Dec 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 53252/73 Addition to 1297653 Heading G3C A bleach-fix bath comprises an aqueous solution of a ferric chelate complex, ammonium thiosulphate and a bleach-fix catalyst which is (a) a water - soluble selenosemicarbazide of the formula:- where one of R 1 and R 2 is H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, R 6 CO- where R 6 is H, alkyl, alkoxy or heterocyclic, or NR 7 R 8 -CSe - where R 7 and R 8 are each H or alkyl, and the other of R 1 and R 2 is H or alkyl, R 3 is H. alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, one of R 4 and R 5 is H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl and the other of R4 and R 5 is H or alkyl, at least one of R 3 , R 4 or R 5 being H and there being not more than one aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic group in the compound or (b) a water-soluble compound of the formula:- where each of R 9 -R 16 is H or alkyl there being not more than four alkyl groups in the compound and at least one of R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 14 , R 15 and R 16 being H and X is -(CH 2 ) m where m is O-4, or (c) a water-soluble 1, 2, 4-triazole-3-selenol where the 5-C carries H, OH, alkyl, amino, alkylamino, arylamino or aralkylamino and one of the N atoms carries H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or (d) a water-soluble 5, 5-bis-1, 2, 4-triazole-3-selenol where the triazole rings are linked directly or via -(CH 2 ) n where n is 1-4 and where one N in each of the triazole rings carries H, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl. The specified catalyst is selenosemicarbazide. The ferric chelate complex may be a complex of ferric salt and ethylenediamine tetracetic acid preferably neutralized with ammonia. The bleach-fix solution is preferably used in a two-tank system having counter current replenishment flow. The replenisher may comprise a concentrated working solution. The use of ammonium thiosulphate instead of sodium thiosulphate in 1297653 enables the bath to retain its activity over a longer period.
