Abstract

1451268 Detection of ketone bodies SHIONOGI & CO Ltd 19 July 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 32122/74 Heading G1B A composition for detection of ketone bodies, especially acetoacetic acid, comprises a heavy metal salt and a nitroprusside salt. The composition may be in the form of a solution containing 1 to 20% of the heavy metal salt and of the nitroprusside salt or may be impregnated into a test strip of absorbing material from a solution which also contains trishydroxy methyl aminomethane. The test strip may be attached to a plastic support member, and/or may be packaged in a plastics or foil wrapper, a plurality of the strips being separately packed or bound together in book form. The heavy metal salt may be an inorganic salt of iron, nickel, copper, cobalt, manganese, chromium or zinc. The nitroprusside salt may be sodium or potassium nitroprusside. The Examples relate to detection of acetoacetic acid in urine. An exemplified test strip is effective with pyruvic acid and alpha keto glutamic acid. Ketone bodies such as acetone or beta hydroxybutyric acid are generally not detectable using the invention using a test strip.
