Abstract

1451162 Displacement transducers XEROX CORP 9 Jan 1974 [11 Jan 1973] 01039/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division H4] The position of a cursor 12, Fig. 1, on the screen of a cathode ray display tube is controlled by means of a position transducer 7 moveable across the surface 10. The transducer comprises a housing 18 enclosing part of a transport sphere 8 which is constrained vertically by a bearing 24, Figs. 2 and 3, and horizontally by four (frictional contact) wheels 26-29, two of which, 26 and 29 are coupled to respective potentiometers 42, 46 the notations of which are proportioned to the X and Y components of the direction in which the housing is moved on surface 10. The potentiometers provide voltage outputs proportional to such components and these outputs are employed via a computer to control the position of the cursor 12. During motion of the housing four bearings of which two 36, 38 only are shown prevent contact of the periphery of the housing with the surface 10. Three push button switches 14 (only one shown) control circuits, which cause changes in the display; e.g. correcting the spelling error indicated by the cursor.
