Abstract

1450739 Preparation of aromatic di- and polycarboxylic acids COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 23 April 1975 [10 May 1974] 20903/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for preparation of aromatic di- or polycarboxylic acids which comprises oxidizing an aromatic hydrocarbon/aldehyde resin. The oxidation may be carried out by (i) using oxygen under pressure in the presence of water and an alkali metal hydroxide, (ii) heating with a dichromate or (iii) reaction with nitric acid. Examples describe the preparation of naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid, a mixture comprising trimellitic, pyromellitic and mellitic acids and benzene pentacarboxylic acid, and pyromellitic acid by oxidation of, respectively, naphthalene and toluene-formaldehyde resins. Naphthalene - 1,8 - dicarboxylic acid may be isomerized using the conditions of the Henkel reaction to obtain naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid.
