Abstract

1450564 Automatic circuit-breakers UNELEC 9 Oct 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 47160/73 Heading H1N An electronic cut-out device comprises a circuit-breaker 1 including an actuating member 4 for manual operation of the breaker; a repeating member 20, or 26, which is connected to member 4 so that movement of 4 causes corresponding movement of 20 (Fig. 1) or 26 (Fig. 5) and so that 4 can reclose the breaker only when permitted by movement of number 20, or 26; a holder for a striker-pin type fuse 3 in series with the breaker 1; and a latch bolt 13, or 38, which is acted on by the striker pin 5 to be moved so as to obstruct the repeating member 20, or 26, and inhibit movement thereof in at least one direction such that reclosing of the breaker 1 is prevented until an intact fuse has been fitted in the holder. In the first embodiment the end 16 of latch bolt 13 projects to the right when pin 5 lifts notch 14 off fuse cap 7 (or if there is no fuse present), and shoulders on the bar 13 overlie a loop 19 of repeater 20 when member 4 (and hence 20) are lowered to the reset position (Figs. 3a and 3b, not shown). Thus the bar 13 prevents upward movement of 20 and 4 to reclose the breaker until an intact fuse is fitted to retain bar 13 as shown in Fig. 1b. The projecting end 16 acts as an indicator of a blown fuse, especially useful in a multi-pole assembly (Fig. 4, not shown). In the second embodiment (Fig. 5) the fuse 3 is arranged above the breaker 1 and the latch bolt is a lever 38 pivoted on a shaft 39 loaded by spring 45 to float in a recess 47. Actuation of striker pin 5 pivots lever 38 about one end against a shoulder 48 in the housing such that a foot 48 overlies end 50 of repeater 26 and prevents upward movement of actuator 4 from the open position shown. If the fuse is removed the foot 49 still overlies end 50 since spring 45 then rotates lever 38 counter-clockwise about shaft 39. A stud 40 projects to indicate that a new fuse is required, a light spring 42 allowing it to be manually pushed back without causing lever 38 to unlatch the breaker 1.
