Abstract
1450392 Radio communication PLESSEY CO Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [20 June 1972] 28919/72 Heading H4L In order that adverse effects caused by different relative propagation times of comraunication signals transmitted between two communication terminals via paths in different directions making use of one or more earthionosphere-earth hops may be compensated for, equipment at one terminal comprises a multi-element aerial array 1, with separate means (phase shifters 3 or 5 and combiners 4 or 6 respectively) associated with each element to afford the array two beam radiation patterns, arrangements 7, 8 being provided so that the amplitude and phase of a signal desired from or applied to the first beam channel may be changed relative to the signal from or to the second. The signals delivered from each beam forming means, when the aerial array is used as a receiver, each contain proportions of the two, relatively delayed, beams received on the directions corresponding to the two array patterns. By adjusting the phase and amplitude of one signal at 7, 8 and combining the two signals at 9, an output may be derived faithfully representing one of the received beams without interference from the other.
