Abstract

1450364 Governors CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 13 March 1975 [20 March 1974] 10561/75 Heading G3B An engine governor comprises flyweights 11 for controlling the movement of a fuel control rod 13, a main spring 12 for assisting movement of rod 13 in an "increase-fuel" direction, and means 23 for changing the spring rate when engine load is suddenly increased or decreased, so as to maintain governor stability. In operation, a lever 21 is positioned to preload spring 12, and as an increased load is placed on the engine the weights 11 move inwardly, and spring 12 forces spring seat 17 to the right, so that rod 13 is moved to "increase fuel" through a servo-mechanism 16. Simultaneously the movement of spring seat 17 to the right moves a damping spring 26 and attached piston 24 to the right so that the force of spring 26 is combined with the force of spring 12. When the engine load is suddenly decreased spring seat 17 moves leftwardly to compress spring 12 and reposition rod 13, whilst simultaneously compressing damping spring 26 so that piston 24 is damped by a fluid in chamber 33 connected to a reservoir 36.
