1450100 Hydraulic actuators TOKICO Ltd 19 Oct 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 05302/76 Divided out of 1450099 Heading F1D [Also in Division F2] An actuating-force generating-device comprises a multi-stage cylinder body 1 having a plurality of cylinders 2, 3, of different diameters and arranged in series, a plurality of pistons 4, 6, the same in number as the cylinders and slidable respectively therein, a piston-rod 8 fixed to the foremost piston 4 and having an actuating end projecting from the forward end of the cylinder body 1, a container 12' provided at the rear end of the cylinder body, a fluid port 19 or 20 in the forward end of each cylinder and intended for introducing hydraulic fluid or discharging it, one or more connecting rods 16 inter-connecting the pistons, and resilient means (e.g. compressed gas) within the container 12' and adapted to urge the rearmost piston, and thereby the piston-rod 8, forwardly. Each of the fluid ports 19, 20 may be selectively connected to a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure such as a pump and a tank (not shown) through electromagnetic valves (not shown). Preferably a vehicle brake is actuated by pistonrod 8. In operation, for normal running, both chambers 11, 14 to the left of pistons 4 and 6 respectively are pressurized, the brake being thereby released. When a slow stop for the vehicle is required, the electromagnetic valves are actuated to permit fluid to flow to the tank rapidly from one of the chambers 11, 14 and at a restricted rate from the other one, so the piston-rod 8 is moved relatively slowly to the left by the gas under pressure in container 12'. When a sudden stop is required, both chambers 11, 14 are evacuated rapidly. An alternative use for the invention is in a press machine.
