Abstract

1450099 Hydraulic actuators TOKICO Ltd 19 Oct 1973 [20 April 1973 (2)] 48810/73 Heading F1D [Also in Division F2] An actuating-force generating-device comprises a multi-stage cylinder body 1, Fig. 1, having a plurality of cylinders 2, 3, of different diameters and arranged in series, a piston, 4 or 6, slidable in each cylinder, a piston-rod 8 fixed to the foremost piston 4 and having an actuating end projecting from the forward end of the cylinder body, a container 12 at the rear end of the cylinder body, each cylinder having a port 19 or 20 in its forward end for admission and discharge of hydraulic fluid, one or more connecting rods, e.g. 16, extending rearwardly from the piston-rod or, as shown, from the foremost piston 4 through the rearmost piston 6 in sealing relation therewith and into the container 12, resilient means, as shown, springs 29, 28, coupled to the rearmost piston 6 and the connecting rod 16 for transmitting a portion of the force of the resilient means to the rearmost piston and the remainder of the force to the connecting rod and thereby to the piston-rod 8, and means, as shown, a stop 18 fixed to the connecting rod 16, for coupling the rearmost piston and the connecting rod 16 for movement forwardly so that when the rearmost piston 6 is blocked by hydraulic fluid in its cylinder 3, only the remainder of the force of the resilient means is transmitted to the piston-rod 8 but when the rearmost piston is not so blocked, the entire force of the resilient means is transmitted to the piston-rod. In operation, when a vehicle brake actuated by piston-rod 8 is required to be applied for purposes other than a sudden stop, an electromagnetic valve 42 is de-energized, whereupon port 79 is connected to a tank 46, so pressure to the left of piston 4 is relieved, and spring 28 applies the brake via seat 75, connecting rod 16 and piston 4. If a sudden stop is required, cylinder 3 is de-pressurized in a similar manner, as well as cylinder 2, whereupon each spring urges its respective piston leftwards. If cylinder 2 is discharged more quickly than cylinder 3, the brake is first applied by spring 28 only. Subsequently, when piston 6 makes contact with the stop 18 fixed to connecting rod 16, spring 29 also acts on piston 4 via piston 6 and stop 18. If valve 42 fails to permit discharge therethrough from cylinder 2, cylinder 2 is de-pressurized via a checkvalve 32 and cylinder 3. An alternative use for the invention is in a press machine.
