1449934 Oxamic acid derivatives AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORP 14 March 1974 [23 March 1973 7 Aug 1973] 11409/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises oxamic acid derivatives of the formulµ in which A<SP>1</SP> is 2-cyanophenyl, 3-fluorophenyl, 4-phenylazophenyl, 4-carbamoylphenyl, 2- nitro - 4 - trifluoromethylphenyl, 2 - cyano - 3- methoxyphenyl 4 - nitro - 3 - trifluoromethylphenyl, 5-chloro-2-sulphamoylphenyl or a radical of the formula wherein R is OH, C 1-6 alkoxy, cyclohexyloxy or NH 2 , R<SP>2</SP> is H, C 1-6 alkoxy, halogen or phenoxy- C 1-6 alkoxy; R<SP>3</SP> is H, C 1-6 alkoxy, halogen or NO 2 ; and R<SP>4</SP> H or C 1-4 alkoxy; with the proviso that at least one of R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is other than H; A<SP>2</SP> is 3-pyridyl, 4-pyridyl, 2-pyrazinyl or 2-pyrimidinyl, and R<SP>5</SP> is C 1-6 alkoxy, or A<SP>2</SP> is 2-pyridyl and R<SP>5</SP> is OCH 3 , cyclohexyloxy or C 3-6 alkoxy; and their preparation by reacting amines of the formulµ or reactive derivatives thereof with oxalic acids derivatives of the formula or reactive derivatives thereof, in which X is COR, where R is OH, C 1-6 alkoxy or NH 2 or a precursor of the group COR, and if required converting the group X in the products to the desired group COR or COR<SP>5</SP> by known methods or converting one group A<SP>1</SP> in the product into another group A<SP>1</SP> by known methods. 2 - Amino - 6 - (2 - phenoxyethoxy)benzamide is prepared by reducing and hydrolysing 2-nitro- 6 - (2 - phenoxyethoxy)benronitrile, obtained by reacting 2-phenoxyethanol with 2,6-dinitrobenzonitrile in the presence of sodium methylsulphinylmethylide. 2 - Amino - 4 - methoxybenzamide is prepared by reducing and hydrolysing 2-amino-4-methoxybenzonitrile.
