Abstract
1449694 Casting-machines L H KILLION 15 March 1974 11664/74 Heading B3F In an apparatus for casting metal parts 110 under pressure and comprising a separable die housing 16 containing die halves 42 and 44, the pressure is applied to the metal in the die cavity by a fluid which also cools the die. Each die half is attached to a piston 36 or 38 slidable within the housing 16 and is provided with a chamber 37 or 38 to which a heating or cooling fluid, e.g. steam, fluorinated hydrocarbons 'or liquid oxygen, is supplied. The fluid for the chamber 37 is supplied through passages 62 . and 66 and leaves through passages 96, 94 and 92, that for the chamber 39 is supplied through passages 64 and 68 and leaves through passages 90, 88 and 86. .The die housing 16 is formed in two halves 28 and 30 and is provided with an aperture 74 through which the molten metal passes to the die, an aperture 80 which may be connected to a vacuum source to evacuate the die and an aperture 98 in which a thermocouple may be mounted. After the molten metal has been introduced into the die the flow of fluid through the passages 62 and 64 is increased; this causes pressure to build up in the spaces behind the pistons 36 and 38 which then move inwardly to exert pressure on the metal within the die. After the metal has solidified the die halves 42 and 44, and the housing halves 28 and 30 are separated and the casting pushed out of the die by ejector rods 54 and 56. In addition to -being moved by the pressure exerted by the heating or cooling fluid, the pistons 36 and 38 are also movable by hydraulic cylinders located outside the housing 16. The die may be heated by resistance or induction heating.
