Abstract

1449671 Door check units I H W ENG Ltd 7 Feb 1974 [13 Feb 1973 17 May 1973] 7055/ 73 and 23472/73 Heading E2X Apparatus for checking the opening of a door hinged to a frame comprises a housing 77 for securing either to a door, or to a frame, an elongate arm 10 slidable relative to said housing and adapted for securing to the other of either the door, or frame, a detent on one longitudinal surface of the arm, and a coiled spring 24 on the housing and provided at each end with engagement means which are urged by the spring to engage the arm, one of said engagement means engaging said longitudinal surface having the detent, and the other engagement means engaging the opposite surface of the arm which is not provided with a detent. As shown, the arm 10 has an aperture 11 for pivotal connection to a door and includes along one edge detent recesses 12, 13, a curved portion 15 and a projection 16 along the other edge, and a nose stop 14. The arm 10 passes between rollers 27, 28 rotatably mounted respectively on the ends 25, 26 of the coil spring 24, the spring ends 26, 25 passing respectively through aligned holes 22, and aligned slots 23, in the side walls 18 of the U-shaped housing 17, and the walls 18 having inwardly turned lugs 19 and flanges 20 for fastening to the door frame. In operation, as the door is opened, the arm 10 is drawn from the housing 17 between the rollers 27, 28, the roller 27 engaging the curve 15 so that a greater pressure is exerted on the rollers 27, 28 as the arms 25, 26 are forced apart. As the door is opened further the roller 28 engages in the recess 12 and checks the door. Increased door-opening force overcomes the spring pressure and allows further opening of the door until the roller 28 engages in the recess 13 and against the nose 14, the roller 27 bearing against the projection 16. In a modification, Figs. 5-7, not shown, each roller (67 or 68) has an integral side flange (69 or' 70), to centralize it in the housing (57), and bevelled side edges. In a further modification when the lower roll (88) finally engages a detent (73) in the lower edge of the arm (50a), Figs. 8, 11 not shown, as the door is opened fully, the upper roller (77) rides over a nose portion (76) on the upper edge of the arm (50a).
