Abstract

1449537 Removing waste products in industrial processes CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 11 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 16335/74 Heading F4X Fume extraction means at the open upper end 12 of a melting chamber 11 (e.g. an electric furnace) comprises a chamber 24 having a central opening therein encircling the end opening 12 of the chamber 11, said chamber 24 being defined by a pair of spaced-apart plates 22 and a wall 23, and spaced-apart guide means (e.g. pins 25) being provided around the central opening of the chamber to guide the fumes from the melting chamber 11 into the chamber 24. The fumes are withdrawn from the chamber 24 by a fan 40 via a manifold 30, telescopic ducting 37, 38, and ducting 36 wherein, upstream of the fan 40, is a damper 39 to regulate the cross-sectional area of the ducting 36 so to conserve the heat in the chamber 11. When the chamber 11 is tilted for pouring (via a spout 16) the damper 36 is opened fully and a cover 18 is moved to close the central opening of the fume extraction chamber.
