Abstract
1,128,854. Preheating charges; metallurgical converters. BETEILIGUNGS-UND PATENTVERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 3 March, 1966 [4 March, 1965], No. 9397/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] Waste gases from an oxygen blown converter 2 are collected by a gas-offtake hood 3 and passed through a cooling flue (4, Fig. 2) and into the upper end of an upright preheating shaft 5 to pass downwards and preheat materials therein, e.g. scrap or ore to be added to the meta bath in the converter, the cooled waste gases then passing through a pipe 10 to a dust removing plant 11. As shown the bottom of the shaft 5 is equipped with a closure shoot 7 pivoted at 9 and hydraulically actuated by a mechanism 8 to open when the converter is tilted. The shoot preferably includes a water seal. The upper part 5<SP>1</SP> of the shaft above the charging hole 6 for scrap may be lined with refractory. Secondary air, additional fuel or cooling agents may be supplied through the charging hole.
