Abstract
1449515 Insulating and refrigerator oils BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 18 Nov 1974 [6 Dec 1973] 56570/73 Heading C5E Electrical insulating oils and refrigerator oils are produced from a paraffinic petroleum fraction having an initial pour point of - 3‹ to +21‹ C., an initial sulphur content of 0À1-3% by weight and a viscosity of 1À5-4 cSt at 210‹ F. by (a) contacting with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising a hydrogenating component selected from Group VIa or VIII incorporated with a crystalline mordenite of reduced alkali metal content (i.e. less than 3%) to lower its pour point and (b) a treatment which reduces the sulphur content by at least 50% and increases the oxidation stability of the oil; the treatments (a) and (b) being carried out in either order to produce an oil having a pour point of not more than - 30‹ C. and a viscosity of 1À5-4 cSt at 210‹ F. The catalytic dewaxing step (a) can be carried out at 250-500‹ C., 7-200 bars gauge using a catalyst comprising a mordenite which can have its alkali metal content reduced by replacement with hydrogen, magnesium or rare earth metal cations and its silica : alumina ratio increased by treatment with HCl or H 2 SO 4 ; the hydrogenating component can be Pt or Pd incorporated by ion exchange or Co or Mo. The step (b) used to reduce the sulphur content can be an acid treatment, catalytic hydrogenation, or solvent extraction with phenol, glycol, furfural or a sulphur dioxide-benzene mixture. In the examples: (1) an Iranian vacuum distillate is catalytically dewaxed, extracted with furfural and then contacted with clay (2) an Iranian vacuum distillate is extracted with furfural and then catalytically dewaxed (3) a Kuwait vacuum gas oil is hydrogenated using a catalyst comprising Co and Mo on silica/alumina at 375‹ C. and 138 bars to reduce its sulphur content and then catalytically dewaxed.
