1449499 Preventing precipitation in hard water GELSENBERG AG 5 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51317/73 Heading C1C Hard water is treated to reduce or prevent the precipitation of dissolved mineral salts therefrom by addition of cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid, at least 60% of which is in the all-cis form, or a water-soluble salt thereof (e.g. with Na, K, NH 4 , triethanolamine), in an amount of at least 1 g. (calcd. as the tetra-Na salt) per cu. m. of water, optionally in conjunction with a pH regulator, sterilizer and/or algicide (none specified), but in the substantial absence of a detergent. The amount of additive may be substoichiometric ("threshold") (1-50 g./cu. m.) or sufficient for complex formation (40-200 g./cu. m./degree German hardness scale).
