Abstract

1348595 Inhibiting scale and corrosion HERCULES Inc 20 March 1972 [24 March 1971 28 Feb 1972] 13009/72 Heading C7E A corrosion- and scale-inhibiting composition for addition to water in contact with metals comprises (A) (1) an inorganic polyphosphate having a molar ratio of alkali metal oxide, alkaline earth metal oxide and/or Zn 0 to P 2 O 5 of 0À4:1 to 2:1 or a corresponding acid (H 2 O: P 2 O 5 = 0À4:1 to 2:1) or (2) an ester R-(OPO 3 H 2 ) x where R is the hydrocarbyl group of a polyhydric alcohol and x = 2-6 and (B) (1) a polyamide containing quaternary NH 4 groups obtained by reacting a polyalkylene polyamine having two primary -NH 2 groups and at least one secondary =NH group with a C 3 -C 8 saturated dicarboxylic acid and reacting the resulting polyamide with an alkylating agent and/or epichlorohydrin or (2) a polyureylene containing quaternary NH 4 groups obtained by reacting a polyalkylene polyamine (as above) with urea and reacting the resulting polymer with an alkylating agent or epichlorohydrin;'the weight ratio (A) to (B) is 2:1 to 50:1. Typical polyphosphates are K 4 P 2 O 7 , H 4 P 2 O 7 , and (NaPO 3 ) 6 ; 5-500 ppm may be maintained in water together with 0À2 - 20 ppm polymer, injected together or separately, each as aqueous solutions, to give a synergetic corrosion- and scale-inhibiting effect, with metals such as steel, Zn, Cu, Al, and their alloys.
