Abstract

1448511 Injection moulding MONTEDISON SpA 20 March 1974 [20 March 1973] 12314/74 Heading B5A Articles having wrinkles on a selected surface or surfaces only are made by injecting plastics material into a mould, cooling the portion or portions of the article providing the selected surface or surfaces at a relatively low rate, and cooling the portion or portions of the article providing the remaining surface or surfaces at a relatively high rate. Thus portions of the mould in contact with the selected surface or surfaces may have a relatively low thermal conductivity, the remaining mould surfaces having a relatively high conductivity. Alternatively different portions of the mould may be maintained at different temperatures. In one example (Fig. 4) a driving mirror of polymethyl methacrylate is made in a metal mould 3 provided with an insulating polycarbonate inlay 4 which causes wrinkling only in a peripheral edge of the mirror leaving the frontal surfaces free of distortion. In Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), a disc of ABS was made in an injection mould having an insulating inlay (8) of polyamide resin around the circumference. In Fig. 13 an article having a strengthening rib is made in a metal mould 9 having insulating inlays 10 of PTFE. Insulating inlays of a polyester resin, a ceramic, polysulphone or polyphenylene oxide may also be used.
