Abstract

1448337 Chlorine dioxide; purifying water KEMANORD AB 24 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 23359/74 Headings C1A and C1C [Also in Division A5] ClO 2 in solution is generated by passing water into a container containing a consolidated or pulverulent mixture of (i) a water-soluble chlorate, (ii) a solid water soluble proton donor and (iii) a water-soluble reducing agent for the chlorate. The chlorate is preferably Na, K or Ca. The proton donor may be oxalic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, amidosulphonic acid, an acid salt of any of said acids, NaHSO 4 or KHSO 4 . The reducing agent may be NaCl, KCl, CaCl 2 or oxalic acid (which may also function as the proton donor). The molar ratio of components (i), (ii) and (iii) is preferably 1 : 0À5-2À5 : 0À3-2À5. In a preferred embodiment the consolidated mixture 1 is placed in a container 3, e.g. of polyethylene or polypropylene underneath a barrier layer 2 of a salt which precipitates an insoluble compound with the acid in the water to thereby prevent or reduce the release of free acid from the container. The container may be a throw-away package which is dipped in water or may enclose an exchangeable package which is replaced when exhausted. The consolidated mixture (1) is preferably in the form of a cartridge having a cavity therein and a space is preferably provided beneath the cavity to receive the solid reaction product formed during the process. The composition is particularly useful for the cleansing of swimming pool water but may also be used for purification of drainage, bleaching, and combatting lavae of mosquitoes and putrifactive bacteria in small pools.
