Abstract
1448290 Modified epoxy resins RHONEPOULENC SA 6 March 1974 [7 March 1973] 10081/74 Headings C3B and C3F A modified epoxy resin is made by heating in the absence of a catalyst, at # 100‹ C. for # 1 hr., a mixture comprising by wt. 100 parts epoxy resin of epoxy E.W. #170, and 10-50 parts of diorganopolysiloxane where each R is independently CH 3 or phenyl; each Z is identical and is H or a hydrolysable C #5 radical being acyloxy, aldimiminoxy, ketoniminoxy, or N,N-dialkylaminoxy; each n is identical and is 1 or 2; x is 1-10; and y=0- 10; and when y#1, then x/y#1. Catalysts may be absent. Towards the end of the operation, the heating may be performed under reduced pressure. Before mixing, the epoxy resin is optionally preheated. The epoxy resin may be made from epichlorhydrin and bisphenol A or a phenol-formaldehyde resin, and optionally contain aliphatic and/or phenolic OH groups. Conventional curing catalysts of the amine or anhydride type may be present, e.g. 10-50 parts catalyst per 100 parts resin. The resin may be cured by heating at 150‹ C. and then 200‹ C. Use.-Protective coatings or coverings for electrical apparatus, floors, swimming pools, tanks, tubes, pipes; electrical insulators.
