Abstract

1447835 Vehicle drives NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 15 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 31291/74 Heading B7H In a motor vehicle power unit comprising a combined heat engine 10 and electric motor 12 powered by a fuel cell 20, a control unit 40 controls the rate of fuel supply from source 30 to each of the engine and fuel cell in accordance with the output requirements of the vehicle. In a preferred embodiment the unit 40 is responsive to the position of accelerator pedal 46 for controlling solenoid operated fuel control valves 36, 38, the engine 10 alone being operated for low power output which is supplemented by the motor 12 for a high power output. Alternatively the engine 10 may be held idling and the motor 12 operated for low output. Shafts 10a, 12a which are shown to be connected in series may be connected in parallel. The engine and fuel cell are assumed to be operated on hydrogen gas with oxygen supplied from the atmosphere, although hydrocarbon fuel may be employed. Different fuels from separate sources may be supplied to the engine and fuel cell.
