Abstract

1447644 Polyurethanes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Sept 1974 [27 July 1973] 35838/73 Heading C3R Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting (a) 1 molar proportion of a linear polyester derived from dicarboxylic acids and diols of which from 10 to 40 molar per cent of the total acid and diol is aromatic, heterocyclic and/or cycloaliphatic in nature, (b) 1 to 8 molar proportions of a compound having a MW up to 250 and two groups reactive with isocyanate groups and (3) an aromatic diisocyanate sufficient to provide 0À9 to 1À1 NCO groups for each NCO- reactive group present in compounds (a) and (b). The polyurethanes may be prepared using one-shot or prepolymer techniques, optionally in the presence of organic solvents. In examples, bis(4-isocyanatophenyl)methane is reacted with polyesters drived from adipic acid. phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol to form prepolymers which are then reacted with 1,4- butane diol. The polyurethanes find particular application as adhesives and coatings.
