Abstract

1447617 Expandable mandrels; friction clutches KODAK Ltd 18 Oct 1973 [4 Sept 1972] 40986/72 Headings F2U and F2C A fluid operated expanding mandrel, for supporting and driving a web rewind core (not shown), while permitting relative slip, has friction pads 7, each comprising a segment 9 of friction material bonded to a metal member 10 with flanges engaged within a T-shaped slot 6, thereby limiting the radial travel, and at the inward limit ensuring that the friction face of pad 7 remains proud of the surface of shaft 1, so that the core cannot come into direct contact with the shaft. Operating fluid is conveyed by an axial bore 2 to intersecting radial bores 4, in which there are plungers 3, each with a seal ring 5. Spacer plate members 8, shaped to prevent their radial movement, are located in the T-slot 6 between the pads 7. A closure member 12, in a widened slot region 11, facilitates assembly of items into the T-slot 6. In operation, the fluid pressure and the speed of rotation of the mandrel may be controlled in relation to the rate of web feed in such a manner that continual relative slipping occurs between the mandrel and the bore of the rewind core as the web builds up on the core. An electrical system which may be used for effecting such control is disclosed in Specification 1,447,618. In alternative embodiments, the mandrel may be used as a clutch or a brake on the core of a web supply roll.
