Abstract

The housing (2) supports the cliper (5) which contains the brake cylinder (7) and piston (17). The piston (17) presses the brake pad (16') onto the brake disc (4) whilst the reaction taken by the cylinder (7) and transmitted through the body (6) forces the brake pad (16) onto the other side of the disc (4). The guides (8) and (8') have outer layers (18)(18') and (20)(20') of metal and an inner layer (19)(19') of elastomeric material. When the brake is applied the friction of the guides (8)(8') exerts a shearing force on the elastomer causing it to deform. When the brake pressure is released the elastomer, in resuming its normal position, pulls the second brake pad (16) clear of the brake disc (4).
