Abstract

1447399 Crease-proofing cellulose 2¢ acetate fabrics HOECHST AG 20 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 59117/73 Heading D1P "Wash and wear" fabrics, i.e. those that do not badly crease on washing are obtained by treating a fabric of cellulose 2¢ acetate fibres with an aqueous liquor containing an N- methylol compound of an alkylene urea or of a carbamate and an acid curing catalyst, drying the fabric to a water content of 11 to 25%, calculated on the weight of the dry fibrous fabric and storing the fabric in that state for 2 to 24 hours at a temperature of up to 50‹C to achieve cross-linking and then rinsing and drying. Specified N-methylol compounds are N-dimethylol compounds of 4, 5-dihydroxyethylene urea, propylene urea, propylene urea substituted in the 4 or 5 position by methyl, methoxy or hydroxy groups, urone, methoxyethyl carbamate and alkyl carbamates. Preferably 4 to 10% by weight of the fabric is applied. The acid catalyst may be hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, formic or trichloroacetic acid. Preferably the solution has a pH below 3. Drying to 11 to 25% water content may be at 20 to 150‹C. In example 1 a sateen weave lining of 2¢'' acetate fibres is impregnated with an aqueous solution of 150 g/l of N-dimethylol methoxyethyl carbamate and 6.5 g/l H 2 SO 4 , squeezed to a 50% liquor pick-up, dried at 110‹C to 13% residual moisture, wrapped in sheets and stored for 20 hours at room temperature, rinsed at 40‹C with 1% NaOH, neutralised, rinsed with cold water and dried at room temperature. In example 2 a knitted fabric was treated. In comparison examples the sateen fabric is (a) embossed with heated rollers and (b) impregnated with an aqueous solution of dimethylol urea and MgCl 2 , dried at 110‹C and heated at 170‹C for 45 seconds to achieve cross-linking in the dry state.
