Abstract
1446672 1,4-Dioxane BASF AG 9 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973] 00923/74 Heading C2C 1,4-Dioxane is prepared by heating diethylene glycol or a homologue thereof in the presence of an acid ion exchanger, wherein the reaction is conducted at a temperature of from 140 to 170‹ C., at a pressure of from 50 to 700 mm Hg absolute in the presence of an ion exchanger based on a sulphonated polystyrene, which may be crosslinked, with simultaneous distilling off of a dioxane-water mixture. The process may be carried out continuously, the glycol being fed continuously to the reaction chamber at a gravimetric rate equivalent to the output of distillate.
