1446662 Preparation of aromatic amines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 March 1975 [24 April 1974] 17881/74 Heading C2C Aromatic primary mono-amines having the formula wherein X 1 , X 2 and X 3 , which may be the same or different, are hydrogen (provided all three are not hydrogen simultaneously), alkyl, hydroxyl, halogen, carboxyl, -COOR (where R is alkyl, substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl), -CONY 1 Y 2 (where Y 1 and Y 2 are hydrogen, alkyl, or cycloalkyl), alkoxy, substituted alkoxy, aryloxy, -NHR 1 , or -NR 1 R 2 (where R 1 and R 2 are alkyl or substituted alkyl), are prepared by catalytically hydrogenating under pressure in a sealed vessel a mono-nitro compound of the formula in liquid phase consisting essentially of the amine I and water by passing compound II into the liquid phase under hydrogenating conditions at a rate substantially equal to that at which hydrogenation takes place.
