1344796 Preparation of aromatic diamines FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 4 Aug 1972 [14 Aug 1971] 36564/72 Heading C2C Aromatic diamines of the general formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> which may be identical or different each represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy or trifluoromethyl group are prepared by catalytically reducing a corresponding nitroaniline of the formula with hydrogen in water in the presence of a compound which is alkaline in water preferably a salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal with a weak acid or ammonia, e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonate or hydrogen carbonate in a concentration of 5 to 20% by weight calculated from the total amount of water. The catalyst may be a nickel catalyst Many examples including the preparation of methoxy, ethoxy, methyl, trifluoromethyl substituted phenylene diamines are given.
