Abstract

1446627 Laminates C SOMMER 13 Dec 1973 [15 Dec 1972 4 May 1973] 57897/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division E1] A wall, beam, pillar or like construction is produced by bonding together in face-to-face relationship a plurality of sheets 1 of thermally insulating, expanded plastics material to form a laminate structure, each sheet having a thickness of 10-25 mm., forming a constructional element by adhering a reinforcing means 4 to at least one of the opposed outer faces of the laminate structure so that the reinforcing means at least partially projects from the face to which it is adhered and assembling a plurality of the constructional elements together by connecting the reinforcing means of contiguous elements to provide a continuous reinforcement, or in the case of a beam or pillar, arranging one or more of the laminate structures to form a core of desired cross-section and adhering reinforcing means 4 to an external surface of the core so that the reinforcing means at least partially projects from the external surface to provide a continuous reinforcement on the external surface, and applying a setting material 6 to embed the reinforcement. Sheets 1 which may be in the same or different materials may be of polyurethane, polystyrene or phenolic foam which may contain a filler, e.g. glass fibres or expanded glass beads, and may be bonded together by mineral cement 3. Reinforcing means 4 may be bonded to the laminate structure with mineral cement 5 and may be a rectangular mesh of wire of undulating form having upper and lower peaks, the lower peaks of which are bonded to the laminate structure. The reinforcing means of adjacent constructional elements may be connected by means of pins or clips or by bending and connecting together laterally projecting portions of the reinforcing means. Hydraulic binder 6 may be applied by spraying. The constructional elements may be in the form of flat panels which may be positioned side by side, end to end or at right angles, or tubular elements the section of which may be semielliptical. The constructional elements may be positioned against an existing wall, the reinforcing means being adhered to the outer faces remote from the wall or to both faces of the laminate structure. Beams or pillars having a hollow core may be fitted with concrete into which reinforcing iron bars or rods are incorporated. Sheets 1 may have mutually opposed faces with complementary embossments which fit into each other and at least one of the outer faces of the laminate structure may be embossed.
