Abstract

1446390 Automatic control BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 3 June 1974 [5 June 1973] 24415/74 Heading G3N An apparatus for automatically measuring and controlling the net-dry-weight of discrete quantities of moisture-containing materials computes an actual desired weight in dependence on moisture-content, target-dry-weight and dryweight error ensuing from all previous weighings. As shown, an instant measure of coke to a hopper is obtained from a voltage follower 10 and modified by an instant moisture-content measure, from a nuclear device 18, in a multiplier 20 to produce an instant dry-weight. A device 24 subtracts the dry-weight from a reference value for a weighing from a module 26 an adds it to a reference value plus preceding error value held in a sample-and-hold module 30. The resultant is held in a sample-and-hold module 28 and applied to a divider device 34, together with the moisture-content measure, and the resultant desired actual value for the next weighing, which is held in a sample-and-hold module 36, and compared in a comparator 14 with the instant coke weight from follower 10 to develop on error signal which energizes a relay 16 controlling a conveyer belt, not shown, supplying the coke to a hopper. The calculating sequence is determined by a camtimer which is automatically started when the hopper begins to fill.
