Abstract
1445520 Tubular abrasive mandrels SANKYO RIKAGAKU CO Ltd and TANAKA PAPER TUBE CO Ltd 1 March 1974 9352/74 Heading B3D A tubular abrasive mandrel is formed of concentric laminated construction each concentric layer being spirally wound one upon the other and secured by adhesive, the inner core layer 1 is spirally wound on a former and the outer surface is pasted, the helical joint 2 formed by this construction is adapted to have a slight gap (1 mm.) between the abutting edges of the wound material to ensure that these edges do not over-lap. The or each intermediate layer 3 is wound in like manner on the core member 1 and likewise pasted, the outer abrasive layer 5 is similarly wound and pasted on to the outer surface of the intermediate layer, the helical butt joint formed by each layer is offset from the joint of a subsequent layer to promote a uniform contour of the outer abrasive surface. The edges of the strip forming the outer abrasive surface are subject to detection by photo-electric cells 17, 18 to ensure that an accurate butt joint is formed during the spiral winding operation, the photo-cells controlling the operation of rotary cutters 20, 21 which trim the edge to remove any irregularities. Rollers are also provided to press the layers together during winding to ensure accurate adhesion between the layers. In the embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the ends of the abrasive tubular layer is trimmed to length by axially movable and radially displaceable cutters located within the core of the mandrel and controlled by photo-electric cells.
