144,538. Haddan, A. J. H., (National Cash Register Co.). March 7, 1919. Machines for writing on books; i paper. carriages; card feeding and guiding arrangements; hammer-impression arrangements.-In connexion with apparatus of the cash register type for recording amounts of money deposited or withdrawn in connexion with banking or similar transactions, each depositor has a book and corresponding to his book is a card retained by the bank. When a deposit or withdrawal is made, the card and book are placed one above the other in the machine, and the amount, together with the depositor's number, is set up on a keyboard. On operation of the machine these items and the date are printed upon the card, which is then automatically ejected and the imprint repeated upon the book. As shown applied to the machine described in Specification 144,373, the carriage 467 upon which the book and card are placed is slidable upon a shaft 469 and guide 478. and when adjusted to bring the card into correct printing line is held by a pin 481 on a spring-influenced lever 482. During the operation of the machine this lever and consequently the carriage are prevented from moving by a disk 484 rotated from the main shaft and notched at 486 to allow movement of the lever 482 only in the non-operating condition. The sets of type-wheels 288, 289 and 290 are mounted on a shaft 291 carried by arms 292, 293 from a shaft 294, and are inked by a ribbon 433. The book is opened and inserted in the carriage between guiding flanges, and is prevented from outward movement by a spring-controlled pivoted arm 487 which has to be depressed by the operator to enable the book to be withdrawn. The card enters between guides 475 and its edges are engaged between pairs of rollers 546, 550. The rollers 546 are feathered on the shaft 469 which, after the impression has been made upon the card, is given one rotation by means of Geneva stop mechanism 570, 573 in order to eject the card. To separate the rollers when inserting a card, the operator has to depress finger-pieces 554 on levers connected with spring-controlled pivoted arms carrying the rollers 550. The card and book are raised against the type by an impression-block 543 on a lever 544 loosely mounted on a shaft 354. An adjacent lever 597 is connected by a pin and a spring slot with lever 544, and is bifurcated to embrace a pin 583 on a cam-operated lever 585 having an arm 588 connected by a spring 586 with an arm 587 on the lever 597. Twice during the operation of the machine the cams 594 allow a contraction of the spring 586 and a rocking of the levers 585, 597 until the former meets a stop. The pin and slot connexion thereupon allows the impression-lever to rise further by its own momentum and to force the card or book against the type. This impression-mechanism is more fully described in Specification 144,543.
