Abstract

1445179 Crimping fibres PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 28 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 60020/73 Heading D1F A method of crimping synthetic thermoplastic fibres, particularly polyolefin fibres. comprises feeding the fibre in tow or yarn form to a crimping chamber 12, advancing the crimped fibre through the chamber 12 and withdrawing the crimped fibre from the downstream end thereof, during passage through the chamber 12 the crimped fibre is exposed to successive zones of steam pressure viz a first zone in which steam pressure progressively increases to a pressure in the range 5-35 psig a second zone of constant higher steam pressure in the range 5-35 psig, and a third zone of progressively decreasing steam pressure. The crimping chamber 12 is preferably a stuffer-box chamber defined between vertical side walls 18 and upper and lower blades 22, 24 which are relatively movable to vary the height of chamber 12. The steam is introduced into the chamber 12 via longitudinal conduits 30, transverse conduits 32 and channel 34. The steam is introduced at a position adjacent the upstream end of chamber 12 but spaced therefrom. Steam is extracted from the chamber 12 downstream of the inlet channels 34 via conduits 36 communicating with a channel 38 incorporating a filtering medium 40 to prevent ingress of fibres. The fibre introduced into the chamber 12 acts as a partial sealant although allowing some escape of steam and therefore the first steam pressure zone is produced upstream of the channels 34. The second steam pressure zone is in the region of the channels 34 and the pressure may be kept constant in response to the pressure measured in the zone by pressure channels 48. The third steam pressure zone is produced downstream of the channels 34 by virtue of the extraction conduits 36 and the partial sealing effect of the mass of crimped fibre. In a preferred embodiment, a tow of polypropylene filaments is drawn, treated with a finish composition, crimped, stapled and baled. The draw ratio is in the range 1.5-5, with a drawn denier per filament of 1.5-80. A preferred composition of finishing agent includes distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride as a surface active agent, capped polyethoxylated straight chain alcohol as a wetting agent, sodium borate decahydrate as a buffer and sodium nitrite as a corrosion inhibitor.
