Abstract
A cigarette filter plug comprising a bundle of substantially uniformly crimped continuous filaments extending through the length of the plug with the crimps in the individual filaments wholly or mainly out of registration with those in adjacent filaments, the bundle being contained in a tube of paper, is characterized in that the bundle is free from inter-filamentary coalescence and increases in diameter by at least 20% when released from the restraint imposed by the tube of paper. Crimped tow 12 is drawn upwardly from a bale 11 over a bar 13, passes horizontally through an airspreader 14, over bars 15, 16 and 17 and downwardly, at an angle preferably less than 25 degrees to the vertical, to the nip of rollers 18, 19. Roller 19 is a smooth driven roller and roller 18 is a steel idler roller, spring-urged into contact with roller 18 and having helical grooves. The tow then passes between a further pair of similar rollers 20, 21 which are driven at a speed faster than the rollers 18, 19. The helical grooves on the rollers 18 and 20 ensure that the filaments are only gripped between the rollers in regions alternating with other regions where the filaments are not so gripped, the particular filaments gripped changing repeatedly during the passage of the tow between the rollers so that different groups of filaments are gripped and released. The opened tow then passes to the garniture 22 of a machine 24, from which it emerges as a continuous rod 25 which is cut into lengths 27 by a knife 26. Preferably the filaments are of cellulose acetate but may be made from other cellulose esters, e.g. cellulose propionate, cellulose acetate propionate, highly esterified cellulose containing less than 0.29 free hydroxyl groups per anhydro-glucose unit such as cellulose triacetate, regenerated cellulose, linear super polyamides such as nylon-6 and nylon-66, linear polyesters and polymers and copolymers of vinylidene compounds such as ethylene, propylene, vinylidene cyanide and acrylonitrile. Quantitative examples are given.
