Abstract

1445070 Coating metal containers CONTINENTAL CAN CO INC 6 May 1975 [20 May 1974] 18868/75 Headings B2E and B2L Metal containers open at one end are coated internally with a heat-hardenable resin by applying an aqueous dispersion of the resin to the container interior, applying water to the exterior of the container while its open end is downmost so that the water drains down the container to mix with and remove surplus resin dispersion which has drained down the container interior to accumulate around the open end, and then heating the container to evaporate any water and harden the interior coating. Preferred coating resins are co-polymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid with C 1-5 alkyl esters of these acids; acrylic, methacrylic or maleic acid copolymers with ethylene or propylene; polyesters of phthalic anhydride with neopentyl glycol; ionomeric resins of Na or K salts of ethylene/acrylic or methacrylic acid copolymers; aminoplasts of melamine, urea or ethylene-ureas with formaldehyde: uron resins and epoxy resins. The carboxylic resins are preferably cross-linked. Apparatus for performing the coating process comprises a conveyor belt 14 for carrying the inverted containers 11 through a tunnel 12, first spraying means 22 for directing an upward spray of aqueous resin dispersion into the containers, second spraying means 28 downstream of 22 for spraying a downward spray of water onto the container exteriors, and heating means (not shown) downstream of the spray 28.The apparatus may include a constraining upper belt 21, and second washing spray means 40. Storage tanks 26, 31 and 41 collect drained resin suspension and washing water respectively, the effluent collected in tank 31 being concentrated by ultra-filtration through a semi-permeable membrane 34 and the concentrated resin re-cycled to tank 26 while filtered water is returned to the washing spray 28. Similar recovery and re-cycling may be effected on the contents of the second washing collection tank 41.
