Abstract

1444935 Transalkylation process IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 22789/73 Heading C2C A transalkylation process comprises the transfer of a tertiary alkyl group from a tertalkyl-substituted phenol to the ortho- and/or para-position of a phenol unsubstituted in the ortho- and/or para-position by contacting in the liquid phase a mixture of the tert-alkyl phenol and the phenol unsubstituted in the ortho- and/or para-position with an activated earth and phosphoric acid at an elevated temperature. The activated earth preferably comprises 0À1 to 5 wt. per cent of the tertalkyl-substituted phenol and the phosphoric acid suitably comprises 0À1 to 0À25 times the weight of the activated earth. The transalkylation preferably takes place at 50‹ to 250‹ C. under atmospheric pressure.
