Abstract

1444189 Sludge blanket clarifier P POLASEK 27 July 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 35902/73 Heading C1C Water is clarified by adding an organic flocculant aid to substantially fully flocculated water and introducing the water into a sludge blanket zone, the water in the sludge blanket zone being substantially free of the flocculation process. Apparatus for use in the above method comprises a flocculation zone 1 to receive raw water, a sludge blanket zone 3 disposed substantially adjacent to the zone 1 to receive water therefrom, means 12 to introduce an organic flocculant aid into the water before its entry into the zone 3, a liquid path between zones 1 and 3, a zone in the liquid path to render flow of water uniform, a zone 7 to receive clarified water and a sludge thickening zone 4. The apparatus may have more than one sludge blanket zone, the water being fed into each zone in proportion to the surface area of the zone, for example by means of a distribution trough 14 divided by baffles 15 into differently sized sections 16 and 17 having overflow edges 18 and 19. The flocculation zone may comprise a stirrer 9 and baffle means 10 to assist in homogenization of the organic flocculant aid with the flocculated water. The organic flocculant aid may be a polyelectrolyte activated by preparation in soft water solution which may be weakly acid or alkaline.
