Abstract

1444006 Water-soluble or -swellable adhesive compositions BASF AG 21 Aug 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 39371/73 Headings C3P C3R and C3U Water-soluble or water-swellable organic adhesive materials are rendered waterproof by adding thereto a condensate obtained in aqueous solution of (i) melamine or a mixture of melamine and at least one other compound condensable with formaldehyde, and (ii) 1À5-8 molar proportions of formaldehyde or the equivalent amount of a compound yielding it, or a precondensate of (i) and (ii) which may be etherified, with (iii) 0À22-2 molar proportions, considered as HSO 3 - of a sulphite and/or bisulphite or a material yielding sulphite ions. A suitable amount of additive is 0À5-10%, based on solids, of the adhesive material. Suitable adhesives include starch and its derivatives and degradation products, proteinaceous materials, (meth)acrylic acid polymers and copolymers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Other compounds condensable with formaldehyde include urea, dicyandiamide, amines, carbonamides, phenols and resorcinol. In the Examples a 40% aqueous condensate is prepared of melamine, formaldehyde, sodium bisulphite and sodium sulphite in the molar ratio 1 : 5 : 0À8 : 0À16 (the latter two calculated as HSO 3 -) or (in Example 4) 1 : 3À33 : 0À67 :-. It is added to a 50% dextrin, 20% starch, 5% carboxymethyl starch or 20% PVA solution in amounts of 3-10% on a solids basis, and these solutions are used to gum paper sheets together.
