Abstract

1443741 Shaped bodies of alumina NIKEX NEHEZIPARI KULKERESKEDELMI VALLALAT 3 July 1973 31680/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B5 and H1] Tubular-shaped, polycrystalline, translucent, dense alumina bodies are formed from finelydivided Al 2 O 3 and an organic plasticizer by cold-flow pressing, heating first to remove the plasticizer and then separately to sinter. The shape of the body may be mechanically altered before heating. The formed body may be supported during the first stage of heating by, e.g. Al 2 O 3 powder which also absorbs the plasticizer; the heating may be at a rate of 5-10‹ C. per hour until the plasticizer is removed and then to a maximum of 1200- 1400‹ C. During the second stage of heating, i.e. sintering the body may be supported in a vertical position on a smooth Al 2 O 3 mandrel and surrounded by an Mo sheath and heated to over 1800‹ C. for 5-10 minutes in an inert gas, a reducing atmosphere, a plasma or a vacuum. The material used may be 90% pure α-Al 2 O 3 , up to 5% γ-Al 2 O 3 , up to 1% plasticizer and a metal additive, e.g. Mg(NO 3 ) 2 . The plasticizer may be paraffin and a fatty acid, e.g. oleic or beeswax and may be dissolved in a solvent to incorporate it in the Al 2 O 3 . The products are used for metal vapour lamp bodies.
