Abstract
1443700 Nuclear power plant NUCLEAR POWER CO (WHETSTONE) Ltd 24 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972 24 May 1973] 39409/72 and 24821/73 Heading G6C In nuclear power plant including a main boiler 11 and an auxiliary boiler 12, steam-to-steam reheat is provided between two successive stages 24B, 24C of the main turbine 24 in a reheater 19 supplied with a portion of the steam generated in the auxiliary boiler 12. In the embodiment shown, in which the boilers are disposed in pods in the wall of the pressure-vessel 10 of a helium-cooled HTR, steam from the auxiliary boiler 12 drives a turbine 13A coupled to a main coolant circulator 13 and, after leaving the turbine, is apportioned between low-pressure turbines 15-17 and the reheater 19. Steam exhausting from the turbines 15-17 is fed, via line 27, to the main turbine steam run either upstream of the reheater 19 (as shown) or downstream thereof. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the circulator 13 is electrically driven enabling the associated steam turbine to be dispensed with. A stand-by fossil-fuelled boiler may supply steam to the circuit of the auxiliary boiler in appropriate circumstances to enable continuity of electric power generation by a generator 18 (Fig. 1) or generators (18, 30) (Fig. 2, not shown), such power being required for use in the plant. The auxiliary boiler 12 is of the once-through type. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the auxiliary boiler 12 is of the recirculation type but consists solely of an evaporator section. The mixture of water and saturated steam generated in this section passes to a steam drum (12A) into which make-up feed-water is fed directly. A pump (12C) returns water from the steam drum to the boiler.
