Abstract

1368954 Steam turbine power plant BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 8 Sept 1971 [28 Aug 1970 25 Sept 1970] 41651/70 and 45878/70 Heading F1Q A power generating plant comprises at least one each of a main boiler 16 and an auxiliary boiler 24, both being heated by a nuclear reactor 10 and respectively arranged to drive main steam turbine 20 and at least one auxiliary steam turbine 26. The auxiliary boilers and turbines are of lower capacity than the main boilers and turbine. A high temperature helium cooled nuclear reactor comprises core 12 within, and cavities 30, 38 arranged around the periphery of, a concrete pressure vessel 14. The turbines 20, 26 respectively drive a main alternator 22 and two auxiliary alternators 28. Main boilers 16 have economizer and evaporator section 32 and a super heater section 34. Coolant pumps 36 circulate coolant down through the core 12 and up through the main boilers. Coolant pumps 42 circulate coolant down through the core, down through economizer, evaporator and superheater sections 40 of auxiliary boilers 24 and then upwards through a central duct (50) Fig. 4 (not shown) to the top of the core. Water is fed downwards through the main boilers and upwards through the auxiliary boilers to achieve counter-flow within the boilers. The main turbine 20 is a multicylinder turbine with high and low-pressure stages, reheaters 18 being provided between the stages and arranged in the cavities 30 to be heated by the coolant. Alternatively steam from the main boilers may be used to heat the reheaters 18 and subsequently to heat the feed-water heaters of the main boilers 16. During periods of large fluctuations in load demand the main turbine and generator are run at a constant rate, the auxiliary turbines and generators being run under varying load. After shut-down the auxiliary boilers and turbines may be continued to run using the residual heat of the core. The feed water heaters are heated by steam bled from the main turbine.
