Abstract

1443170 Fuel tanks HOECHST AG 26 July 1973 [26 July 1972] 35648/73 Heading B7H A polyolefin fuel tank is provided with a coating of plastics material having a low permeability for methane. Suitable materials for the tank are high density polyethylene, polypropylene and copolymers of ethylene and propylene. Suitable materials for the coating are polyacetal, polyamide and polyterephthalic acid esters, preferably polyethylene terephthalate, and laminated compound sheets of these plastics with polyvinylidene chloride. Also compound sheets of polyamide, polyacetal or a polyterephthalic acid ester with low density or high density polyethylene may be used as the coating. The coating may have a metal layer, or an outer layer of graphite and/or carbon black to avoid electrostatic loading of the fuel tank. The tank may be coated on both its inside and outside. In a method of coating a tank, a preformed coating with a polyethylene layer on the side to be bonded is first placed in an injection moulding or deep drawing device and fastened therein by suction, contact adhesives, or by electrostatic bonding. The polyolefin tank is then formed in the mould so that the coating is bonded to the outside of the tank. Extrusion blow moulding techniques may be employed in a similar manner.
